In this section I will write articles on a wide variety of topics in editorial format, meaning roughly 250 words a piece. I welcome feedback and I will post intelligent responses that I receive from readers. Please email any comments or debate to Admin@AccordingToRay.com
Personal Accountability
Written by Ray Coover. December 5th, 2007
Just what in the world happened to personal responsibility in our society? In a country where you can sue fast food companies for making you fat, blame society for literally every hardship that has befallen you and pay therapists thousands of dollars to tell you that it’s all your parents fault, has personal accountability simply vanished? There is obviously no doubt that some people are dealt better hands than others, such is the game of life, but just like poker it is how you play that hand that ultimately decides your fate and far too many Americans are content to fold early and complain their way into a semi-mediocre existence.
Government, and indeed society in general, does not owe its citizens guaranteed prosperity. The idea of guaranteed prosperity is nothing new, Socialist “utopias” have been tried before. Soviet Russia and Maoist China tried the Socialist route and it failed miserably, which is the inevitable fate of all utopian idealisms. Capitalism works, and while the government certainly should aid its less fortunate citizens in an effort to balance prejudice and injustice, we are all responsible for own destinies and in the end we can only expect from life what we are prepared to give. The American Dream is still a viable reality for citizens of this great nation; take responsibility for your decisions, strive to improve your position in life through hard work and determination and join the millions of people who have lived their dreams because they took advantage of this Land of Opportunity.
